Finally, Hanson has historically been both the party’s greatest strength and its greatest weakness. His first victory at Oxley in 1996 was over an unendorsed Liberal candidate. It was voted on again in 1998. When you’re out of politics (and considering getting into politics) England), the party struggled in the 1998 Queensland state election despite an initial wave of excitement (winning 11 seats from around 22 per cent of the initial vote). None of those elected in the next election were still in the party.
