Ex-NFL quarterback questions Giants’ decision to fire Brian Daboll

Former NFL quarterback Dan Orlovsky said Monday he believes the New York Giants should give head coach Brian Daboll another year because of his improving relationship with Jaxson Dart.
The Giants fired Daboll after the team took the lead once again in the fourth quarter. This time we faced the Chicago Bears. Orlovsky said on ESPN that the Giants may have made a move early in the Daboll era.

“I believe this was a mistake the New York Giants made. It was clear that the quarterback and the head coach were doing something together; at least there was production, performance and hope together,” the ESPN NFL analyst said. “Leads in the fourth quarter are obviously something you sit there and kill yourself. This team lost their best player and then probably their second or third best player in (Cam) Skattebo, certainly an offensive weapon. Them building that lead has to guarantee something.”
“The reality is that this defense, which has something like a billion dollars or an early draft pick, has blown a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter four different times this year, and they just couldn’t find ways to secure the lead. So, while we can sit there and say Daboll didn’t make it, most of their highly prized defensive talents didn’t.”
The Giants’ defense left a lot to be desired.

New York’s defense ranks 27th in points allowed and 29th in yards allowed. The Giants took a 75-37 lead into the fourth quarter of their five-game losing streak. Brian Burns exceeded expectations with an NFL-leading 11 sacks, but the secondary was almost non-existent.
The Giants have named offensive coordinator Mike Kafka the interim head coach.
“We talked this morning about the direction of our team on the field and decided it is in our best interest to make a change at the head coaching position at this time,” team president John Mara and president Steve Tisch said in a joint statement.
“The last few seasons have been disappointing and we have not lived up to our expectations for this franchise. We understand our fans’ frustrations and will work to deliver a significantly improved product.
