The family of 61-year-old retired police officer Peter Meagher, who was killed in Bondi on Sunday, paid tribute:

“The tragic irony that Peter spent so long on the dangerous front lines as a police officer and was shot in retirement while pursuing his passion for photography is hard to fathom,” the family said in a statement released Monday night. he said.

A friend named Steve Keys recalled their last conversation: Meagher told him how lucky he was that he didn’t have to draw his gun.

“It’s incredible that he served for so long and this was his tragic death,” he said.

The Meagher family said they are “saddened to lose our beloved Peter. He was a treasured brother, husband and uncle whose kindness, generosity and love touched everyone who knew him. Our lives have been changed forever.”

Meagher is survived by his wife, Virginia, and his four younger brothers, Greg, David, Andrew and Paul.

A member of the NSW Police Force for 34 years, Meagher rose to the position of Detective Sergeant until his retirement in 2021. After retiring, he became a freelance photographer and was assigned to Bondi to photograph the Hanukkah Festival on Sunday.

“We are grateful for the support from our friends and the community,” they said. The Meaghers asked for privacy and space to grieve together as a family.

“We also ask the media to respect our wishes and remember Peter for the life he lived, not the final form.”
