SC Refuses Urgent Hearing on Plea Seeking Probe into CJP

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday refused to hold an emergency hearing on a plea seeking an investigation into allegations of fake advocates and activities linked to the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), a satirical digital group that has recently taken social media by storm. A bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi asked advocate NK Goswami, who appeared for the petitioner, not to take up the matter “so emotionally”.

Goswami stated that despite the CJI’s statement, a distorted and malicious narrative continues.

“Don’t take it so emotionally,” the CJI said.

Another lawyer said they wanted a CBI probe into fake law degrees and courtroom dealings cannot be used for commercial purposes.

“There is no such serious urgency. Let’s see,” the CJI replied.

The petition also requested a lawsuit against those involved in the alleged commercial exploitation of verbal observations made during court proceedings. He demanded an investigation be launched against fake lawyers who allegedly practiced law using fake diplomas.

Expressing concerns about the abuse of judicial proceedings, the defense claimed that the comments and observations made during the court proceedings were used for promotional campaigns.

The CJP emerged recently amid controversy over remarks attributed to CJI Surya Kant regarding “cockroaches” and “parasites” during his May 15 hearing on a plea regarding senior appointment of a lawyer.

On May 16, the CJI issued a strongly worded statement on his remarks, saying he was “regretted” by media reports suggesting that he was critical of young people.

He emphasized that his remarks were specifically directed at individuals who entered the legal profession with “fake and fake diplomas” and that they were “misreported by a section of the media.”
