Shamar Elkins is identified as shooter who killed EIGHT children in daylight bloodbath

The gunman accused of shooting and killing eight young children in Shreveport, Louisiana, on Sunday morning has been identified as Shamar Elkins.

Elkins, 31, opened fire at a home in Shreveport during a domestic disturbance, former Caddo County Police Officer Patrick Young told the Daily Mail.

The Shreveport Police Department said the suspect who was fatally shot by police during a vehicle chase is accused of killing eight children, the youngest of whom was just 18 months old.

Police say he is believed to be the father of some of the victims KSLA.

While 10 people in total were shot, two women survived the fatal attack. One of them is believed to have some sort of relationship with Elkins, according to authorities.

Police said one of the female victims, believed to have been shot in the head during the incident, suffered life-threatening injuries.

The horrific ordeal took place in three different locations. The first 300 blocks of West 79th Street near Linwood Avenue was the site of the massacre of children in a house just a stone’s throw from a Baptist church.

Elkins then committed a carjacking in that area and led officers on a high-speed chase, heading a quarter-mile away toward Harrison Street between Wallace Boulevard and Bernstein Boulevard, police said.

It then went to the third location in Bossier Parish on Brompton Lane near Long Acre Drive. There he was shot dead by the police.

The scene was described by police spokesman Christopher Bordelon as ‘fairly extensive’. “We believe he was the only person who opened fire on these places here,” he added.

He said some of the children in the house were “his grandchildren” but did not give further details.

Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux solemnly addressed the community shaken by the attack.

The mayor added that the incident was “perhaps the worst tragic situation we’ve ever had in Shreveport.”

“So we’re going to be processing the information right now, and it’s in very safe hands,” he continued.

The investigation is still ongoing.

Speaker Mike Johnson shared his condolences following the ordeal Sunday morning.

He wrote: ‘Heartbreaking tragedy in Shreveport this morning; 8 children were senselessly killed and many more were injured. My team is in contact with local law enforcement as more details emerge.

‘We are keeping the victims, their families, their loved ones, and our Shreveport community close in our thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time. And we are grateful to Shreveport, Bossier and the Louisiana State Police for their quick response.’

Caddo Parish Schools Superintendent Keith Burton called the attack “an unspeakable tragedy.”

He added: ‘We know that eight young lives were taken too soon. They were children whose dreams, hopes and futures were just beginning to take shape.

‘There are no words that can make sense of such a loss. As a society, we must embrace each other in the coming days.

‘We must take care of our children, support our families, and stand with our educators and first responders who are bearing the burden of this moment.’

Attorney General Liz Murrill’s office sent the following statement: ‘Many law enforcement agencies are investigating this tragic situation.

‘We don’t know all the details yet, but I am deeply saddened by the senseless loss of life.

‘I pray for the victims and their family members in the wake of this devastating violence.’

Shreveport, located about five hours outside of New Orleans, is a high-crime area known for violence, according to Neighborhood Scout.

The report showed that one in 82 people in Shreveport was the victim of a violent crime, while in the state of Louisiana the figure was 192.

“We have a community that is suffering, we have families that are suffering, we have injured police officers, forensic personnel, fire departments, sheriff’s men,” Arceneaux said.

‘This affects the whole society. We all mourn with these families.

‘A Sunday morning. I ask everyone who is listening, who can pray at your services this morning, not just for this family, but for all the victims.’
