On Monday morning the prime minister was preparing to reset relations with MPs following the resignation of his top aide Morgan McSweeney.
Just before noon, news broke that Keir Starmer’s communications director Tim Allen had resigned. At midday it emerged that Anas Sarwar, Labour’s leader in Scotland, was preparing to hold a press conference urging Starmer to stand down.
The aim was to cause rebellion. But by late afternoon, cabinet ministers were emerging one by one to support the prime minister. For now, his position seems safe.
