Mad dash to win climate conference hosting rights

The proposal to host Australia’s large global climate conference may depend on diplomatic “horse trade” while government officials are trying to break the locking with the opponent Türkiye.

Prime Minister Anthony Arbanese will face the Turks on Thursday (Aest) to solve a deadlock on the rights of hosting for negotiations.

Albania, as global temperatures increase the burden of rising sea levels and more frequent storms with the pacific nations with the next year’s COP31 event wants to host.

The UN processes dictate that a country from the “Western Europe and other states” group, which includes Australia, will host the 2026 events.

The decision on the rights of hosting is made only by consensus, and Türkiye refuses to quit the proposal to execute the climate conference from the same grouping.

With the President of Türkiye Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, “Discussions” is a high -level priority on the last full day of Mr. Albania in the United States and probably the chance to take a step.

Mr. Albania claimed that if the issue votes, Australia would win overwhelming, but would not be drawn to negotiations.

“We don’t know, that’s the truth, dedi he said when the issue was asked that it could not be solved by the end of the week.

The Pacific countries are willing to take the conference for Adelaide in November 2026, as shown unanimously approved by Australia at the Pacific Islands Forum Summit this month.

Palau president and PIF President Surerangel Whipps JR, Solomon Islands told reporters, “We want to host Cop31,” he said.

He continued: “We deserve to host Cop31 and considering the support and depth, if others clean the road would be seen in good faith.”

Former Australian climate negotiator Richie Merzian said that Albania should offer additional sweeteners to secure its rights to host Türkiye.

“When it comes to negotiations, it is really an exercise that trafficks.” He said.

“We can potentially support Turkish interests in order to secure other UN hosting rights or UN roles, and we can push on behalf of Turkey for access to certain global funds related to climate change.”

Mr. Merzian, the president of a large investment group that focuses on clean energy, said that the negotiations at the 2026 Climate Conference will probably go under the wire and may not be decided until the end of this year’s police in November.

He drew attention to the 2024 meeting, where the host was decided only in the last days of the previous year’s conference.

“Literally, to meet the agreement, Merzian received a common press release with a prisoner between the two countries (Armenia and Azerbajan) to meet the agreement.” He said.

Green Senator Sarah Hanson-Yung warned that it is important for Australia to host climate talks and that the Prime Minister would fail if he returns home without guaranteeing the host rights.
