President Donald Trump signed an agreement on Tuesday. executive order We require companies to provide AI models to the federal government to evaluate their capabilities prior to full release.

Technology companies will comply with the order voluntarily. It asks them to participate in a benchmarking process to evaluate the cybersecurity capabilities of AI models and allows the government to help select “trusted partners” that will provide early access to the models.

“Nothing in this section shall be construed to permit the creation of a mandatory governmental licensing, prior authorization, or authorization requirement for the development, publication, release, or distribution of new artificial intelligence models, including frontier models,” the decision said.

Trump signed the order privately, just weeks after postponing a signing ceremony with prominent tech CEOs because he “didn’t like some of it,” he told reporters at the time. The order, announced Tuesday, is vague on details.
