Temperatures set to plunge this week as rain showers and frost hit the UK

The Met Office said temperatures will drop this week after a quiet Bank Holiday weekend and a scorching 25 degrees on Friday.
The forecaster said a cold Arctic blast would force the wind to turn northward on Tuesday and Wednesday, as the mercury was expected to drop as low as -5C in the rural north in the early morning hours.
The coldest day of the week will be Wednesday and temperatures will drop 5 degrees below the May average.
Met Office forecaster Tom Morgan said: “Winds will ease as the isobars move further apart and this is a recipe not only for an area of fog or two but also for a much colder night.
“So we could see a fairly widespread frost in the countryside from Wednesday. In more northern parts of the UK, -4C or -5C is possible in some prone rural areas, so gardeners and growers be aware we could be in for some damaging frosts.”

The cold weather in the middle of the week will turn into milder weather towards the end of the week.
Temperatures on Thursday will rise slightly to 14C or 15C in the south, but will not exceed 9C or 10C in northern Scotland.
Thursday will also be a windier day for north-west Scotland, with showers also expected to be cloudier. However, a drier day is expected for England and Wales.

The “strong May sun” will shine on Friday morning and the mercury will rise to 16 or 18C, giving some hope for the weekend.
But the forecaster said “showers could be seen across parts of the UK” on Friday afternoon.
