Trump’s plans for ‘most beautiful’ arch in DC released

US President Donald Trump’s plans for a new triumphal arch in Washington, D.C., include a Lady Liberty-like torch and high-winged figure with a crown, flanked by two eagles and guarded by four fully gilded lions.

The 12-page plan, released Friday by the U.S. Commission on Fine Arts, shows that the arch will stand 76.2 meters from its base to the tip of the winged figure’s torch, and the words “One Nation Under God” and “Liberty and Justice for All” will be written in gold letters on either side of the monument.

The plan shows the structure would be located between the Lincoln Memorial to the east and Arlington National Cemetery to the west, and within a traffic circle connecting Washington to Northern Virginia. The arch will be dwarfed by the 30.2-foot-tall Lincoln Memorial.

Trump posted on social media, “It will be the LARGEST and MOST BEAUTIFUL Arc de Triomphe anywhere in the world. It will be a wonderful addition to the Washington DC area for all Americans to see for decades to come!” he wrote.

Trump has said he wants to build the arch near the Lincoln Memorial and argued that the nation’s capital first sought such a monument 200 years ago.

“It was interrupted by something called the Civil War, and that’s why it was never built,” Trump said in February.

“Then in 1902 they almost built something, but it never happened.”

Trump said that while major cities around the world have such monuments, Washington is the only city that does not have such monuments.

The arch is one of several architectural changes Trump will make during his second term. In addition to building a grand ballroom in the White House, he also made alterations to the Oval Office, turning the Rose Garden into a paved veranda.

The arch extends beyond the White House, giving Trump a chance to leave another lasting monument in a city known for them. This would expand on his earlier talk of beautifying the city by replacing its “tired” lawns, broken signs and street medians.
