WA’s first set of quadruplets in six years delivered in Perth hospital
WA’s first quadruplets in six years were born at King Edward Memorial Hospital on Tuesday, surprising Kalgoorlie parents who already have a three-year-old son.
Belinda and Emmanuel Lotsu thought they were going to have triplets after a successful in vitro fertilization journey last year.
But halfway through the pregnancy, we were told there were actually four babies on the way.
“You could see the surprise on his face,” Emmanuel said. 9 News Perth. “He was very surprised and stunned.”
Babies aged 32 weeks and 3 days, three girls and one boy, weighing between 1.5 and 2 kilograms, were born by cesarean section on Tuesday.
“She did an absolutely amazing job of getting them to 33 weeks for four babies and growing at that pace,” said King Edward Memorial Hospital Nurse and Midwifery Coordinator Jourdin Ross.
“They’re all in extremely good shape. They’re all born with really good weights.”
The expected birth of the babies, the first set of quadruplets to be born in the state since 2020, triggered coordinated planning for emergency scenarios, newborn care capacity and maternal and infant safety.
“Beyond clinical care, the hospital provided comprehensive support to the family,” Ross said. “Ensuring compassion, dignity, and continuity of care during an extraordinary and stressful experience.”
All four babies – Amy, Amana, Amon and Amber – are being cared for in specialist neonatal services and the hospital said this reflects its integration into King Edward’s neonatal care pathways for fragile and premature babies.
Their records show there are 14 pairs of quadruplets in WA, with the last one born in 2020.
There have been two births of quintuplets in WA, one in 1989 and the other in 1999.
An average of five triplet births occur annually in the state.
Family-oriented care consists of many services, including obstetrics, midwifery, anesthesia, neonatology, nursing, operating room teams and support services, working together seamlessly, often under significant time pressure and clinical complexity, Ross said.
All four babies were born within four minutes.
The couple, who are originally from Ghana and now live in Kalgoorlie, will remain in the care of King Eddie’s staff for at least a month before returning home.
