Australian cricket star Damien Martyn was reportedly hospitalized the next day after falling ill and his condition was ‘serious’.

Herald Sun The 54-year-old man, living in Brisbane, reportedly fell ill after going to bed last Friday.

AFL legend Brad Hardie sent his ‘thoughts and prayers’ to Martyn and his family during his midnight radio broadcast on 6PR on Tuesday.

‘WA’s champion, great batsman Damien Martyn… unfortunately fell ill on Boxing Day and is currently in hospital in Queensland, fighting the fight of his life,’ Hardie said.

The nature of Martyn’s illness has not yet been disclosed.

This comes as Martyn traveled to the X on Christmas Eve to share his excitement about Australia’s fourth Ashes Test at the MCG.

‘If the old brigadier could play again then this would be it,’ he wrote, attaching a picture of the MCG.

As a top-order batsman, many of Martyn’s colleagues respected his brilliant skill and ability to score runs.

Martyn captained Australia at U19 level before making his Test debut in 1992.

Playing First Class cricket for Western Australia, Martyn scored 4,406 runs in 67 Test matches during his career.

Martyn also had spells in the English County Championship with Leicestershire and Yorkshire.

He was also drafted to play for Rajasthan Royals in the 2010 IPL season.

Martyn particularly surprised the cricket world by announcing his retirement from all forms of cricket midway through the 2006-07 Ashes season, at the age of 35.

The West Australian star was in contention to start the third test in Perth but said it was “time to step aside”.

Following his career, he would enjoy several cameos in the media, appearing on various television broadcasts and podcasts to offer his views on cricket.
