Woman stripped, paraded with slipper garland after temple entry dispute; two women arrested

Police arrested two women for their alleged involvement in robbing another woman and parading her on the road with a slipper garland around her neck, following a dispute over a caste panchayat’s ban on a Rajput family entering a temple in Ulhasnagar on the outskirts of Mumbai.

The incident took place on Friday, May 15, 2026, in Waghri Nagar area of ​​Ulhasnagar, while a religious program and community feast was being held at the temple premises. A youth from the victim’s family objected to the panchayat caste restriction, saying his family had done nothing wrong. He then entered the temple premises and angered some members of another community present there.

According to the police complaint, the suspect then attacked the teenager’s family home with sticks and sticks. The men of the family were attacked, and the attackers threatened the women with severe consequences if they contacted the police.

However, when 50-year-old Kanta Prem Rajput, her sister Geeta Rajput and daughter Anjali were going to the police station to file a complaint, the accused caught them and dragged the women onto the road. Miss Kanta Prem Rajput was partially undressed, her hair was cut with scissors and a slipper garland was worn around her neck. Then there was a parade on the road for about two kilometers. During the parade, many people had to touch their feet. Ms. Geeta Rajput and Ms. Anjali were also attacked.

Videos showing bystanders watching and recording the incident on their mobile phones were posted on social media and shared widely.

Police said the families of both the victim and the accused belong to the same community. Allegations had previously been made against the victim’s family, following which the family faced a social boycott.

After the incident, the victims contacted the police. The family said that the police did not take the matter seriously at first and registered the case only after a few hours. Victims also said police invoked sections of the law that did not reflect the nature of the violations against women.

Ulhasnagar Central police registered a case under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 against Jyuli Waghri, Vinu Waghri, Pappi Waghri, Nitin Thorat, Rohit Waghri, Sonu alias Balu Waghri, Mahesh Waghri and others.

Two women were arrested. The main accused and several others remain at large. Police said cases have been registered against members of both the families.
