World Cup 2026: VAR costs Germany in loss to Paraguay on penalties

Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, who worked on German television during the World Cup, compared Tah’s disallowed goal to the goals scored by Premier League champions Arsenal throughout the season.

Klopp told MagentaTV: “Arsenal can’t be champions of England if the goal is against the rules. They’ve scored 60% of their goals that way.”

“We [Germany] When the ball goes in you win the game. So of course this is cruel.”

As the match restarted, former Premier League assistant referee Darren Cann shared his views on the decision.

Speaking on BBC One, Cann said: “I think it’s lenient.”

“But based on what we’ve seen in the tournament so far, I wouldn’t be surprised if they don’t knock it out.

“We’ve seen two or three goals disallowed for very minor infringements. It’s not a big deal.

“It’s a small block for the goalkeeper, but not enough for me. I suspect they will ignore it. We think it shouldn’t be allowed.”

Former Scotland winger Pat Nevin, who was in Boston for BBC Radio 5 Live, also believed the flagrant foul was not clear enough to rule out a goal.

He said: “There is chaos. There is a block, did it affect the goalkeeper? It looks like that.

“This is a subjective call. It’s not clear.”
