Two people arrested after trying to enter Faslane nuclear base | Trident

Two men, one of whom appears to be Iranian, have been arrested after trying to enter the Faslane nuclear submarine base in Scotland in what could have been an attempt at espionage.

A 34-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman were detained by Police Scotland late on Thursday afternoon as they sought access to one of Britain’s most sensitive military areas. The base is home to the UK’s Trident submarines and is not open to the public.

While it is understood that the man is of Iranian nationality, the nationality of the woman is not yet known. The incident is not considered to be particularly serious by the Ministry of Defense at this stage.

The pair were unable to gain access to the base, and requests to enter immediately sparked concern. They were allegedly arrested after staying nearby and were deemed to be acting suspiciously. Sun.

Their aim is unknown and security sources say it is too early to be sure it is an attempt at espionage, but there are growing concerns in the UK about possible threats from Iran.

Separately on Thursday, Nematollah Shahsavani, 40, an Iranian-British national, and Alireza Farasati, 22, an Iranian national, appeared in Westminster magistrates’ court accused of conducting hostile surveillance of places and persons associated with the Jewish community in the London area.

A Royal Navy spokesman said: “Police in Scotland arrested two men who unsuccessfully attempted to enter HM Naval Base Clyde on Thursday, March 19. As the matter is subject to an ongoing investigation, we will not be commenting further.”

A Police Scotland spokesman said officers became aware of two men attempting to enter the base at around 5pm. “A 34-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman have been arrested in connection with the relationship and investigations are ongoing.”
