Albanese to host PNG and Tonga leaders at State of Origin
Anthony Albanese He will host the leaders of Papua New Guinea and Tonga at the Status of Origin decision in Brisbane on Wednesday night, amid a series of high-level diplomatic talks this week.
The Prime Minister will travel to Fiji and the Solomon Islands on Monday and Tuesday, then return to Queensland for the rugby league series decider on Wednesday night. While NSW and Queensland will win one match each, the third and final match will be played at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium.
The Albanian government has made the sport of rugby league a key diplomatic issue in the Pacific, including backing the inclusion of a PNG team in the NRL competition from 2028 with $600 million in federal funding. Tonga and PNG have a strong history in rugby league and a number of players from both countries play in the NRL.
Wednesday is also the day Australia’s new mutual defense agreement with PNG comes into force. Albanese will meet the leaders of PNG and Tonga for bilateral meetings where regional security, trade and economic growth are on the agenda.
“This important series of meetings in Brisbane comes at a time when we are working closely with our Pacific family on issues important to our region,” Albanese said.
I look forward to welcoming the Pacific leaders to Brisbane on Wednesday and attending the State of Origin event with them. We’re bringing our Pacific family closer together through one of Australia’s most beloved sporting codes.

David Crisafulli He promised to put more young criminals in prison.
The Queensland premier said in his opening speech to the Liberal National party’s state conference on Sunday that his government would create and legislate a new offense by the end of the year and impose a yet-to-be-determined mandatory sentence for repeat offenders who commit serious crimes while on bail.
“Breaching bail, going to jail, is the next stage of adult crime and adult time holding young offenders accountable for the first time in a long time,” Crisafulli said.
We’re moving in the right direction and we’ve heard from Queenslanders telling us to keep going, and we will do so by reforming Labour’s weak bail laws.
But the head of the Youth Advocacy Center, katherine hayesHe said Queensland already had the “toughest youth bail laws in Australia”; This was a model that had become increasingly punitive under the previous government, introducing a presumption against bail into the Youth Justice Act and making breach of bail a criminal offence.
“Queensland already has more children locked up than anywhere else in Australia, more than Victoria and New South Wales combined,” Hayes said.
This is a step towards further toughening already harsh bail laws.
CEO of Sisters Within, Debbie KilroyHe said the LNP government had “declared war on children”.
“Queensland is building a youth justice system based on headlines rather than evidence,” he said.
