The King and Queen welcome stars including Nina Dobrev, Karlie Koss, Katherine Jenkins and Anna Wintour to charity gala in New York

King Charles and Queen Camilla welcomed a host of famous faces to a charity gala in New York.

The likes of Anna Wintour and Lionel Richie were among the celebrity supporters of the King’s Trust, who joined its founder and the Queen on Wednesday to celebrate the charity’s work and showcase the UK’s cultural impact on New York.

The gathering of stars, including Italian fashion designer Donatella Versace, British creative Stella McCartney and model Iman, took place at the end of a whirlwind royal day in Manhattan.

The King and Queen began the ceremony commemorating those killed in the September 11 terrorist attacks by stating their “enduring solidarity with the American people.”

Charles and Camilla’s words of condolence were written in a message accompanied by a bouquet of flowers left at the majestic memorial in New York in memory of the thousands of people who lost their lives almost 25 years ago.

At the same event, he also met New York mayor Zohran Mamdani, who suggested that the King return the Koh-i-Noor diamond to India, hours before meeting him.

In contrast to the touching moment at the 9/11 memorial, the Queen later met Sex and the City star Sarah Jessica Parker at an event celebrating literature at the New York Public Library, saying actress Camilla’s visit was “wonderful for all New Yorkers”.

Richie, the first global ambassador and chair of the King’s Trust’s Global Ambassador Group, said of Charles’ speech on Capitol Hill on Tuesday: ‘I thought it was very clever and how it threaded the needle; very clever, but he brought us back to humanity in a way only he could.

‘A friend who gives advice on what we should do, a wise friend.’

Charles and Camilla will end their four-day state visit – the King’s first to the US as monarch – on Thursday, commemorating the 250th anniversary of US independence.

Speaking to NBC in an interview to be broadcast in the US on Thursday, Camilla told Jenna Bush Hager: ‘Everyone was so kind and welcoming.’

On Tuesday, the British royal family attended a lavish state dinner hosted by President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump at the White House in Washington, DC, during their four-day state visit.

On Wednesday evening, Trump said the King would “probably assist” in a US military strike against Iran.

The US President made this statement in the Oval Office after Charles’ speech to Congress, in which he argued for the need for a strong NATO and aid to Ukraine, which was criticized by the American leader.

Mr Trump has repeatedly criticized Britain for not joining the attacks on Tehran and branded Sir Keir Starmer weak and indecisive.

The President said: ‘The King is magnificent. We spent a lot of time together. We talked a lot. We talked about this too, he loves his country, he is a great king and he is a very good friend of mine.

‘And I think if he did that, if it were up to him, he would probably help us with Iran.’

Mr Trump added: ‘I think he is an outstanding representative for his country. I think people in the UK should be proud.’

Mr Trump also claimed in a speech during the King’s state visit on Tuesday that Charles agreed with him on the need to prevent Tehran from acquiring a nuclear bomb.

Talks with the monarch are normally kept secret, but the president told a white-tie state banquet: ‘We have defeated this particular rival militarily and we will never allow that rival to have nuclear weapons – Charles agrees with me, even more than I do – we will never allow that rival to have nuclear weapons.’

In response, a Buckingham Palace spokesman said: ‘The King is naturally conscious of his Government’s long-standing and well-known position on the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons.’

As part of the state visit, British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper and her US counterpart Marco Rubio held talks in Washington about the urgent need to restore the free movement of ships in the Strait of Hormuz.

The conflict, which has emerged amid the Iran conflict and a fragile ceasefire between the United States and Tehran, has effectively shut down the shipping route that is the main route for oil and gas supplies, causing energy prices to soar and hurting the global economy.
