Australian legend Meg Lanning appointed UP Warriorz captain after historic run with Delhi Capitals

Meg Lanning has been named the UP Warriorz captain for WPL 2026, marking a major leadership change at Delhi Capitals after reaching three consecutive finals. This move adds experience and tactical depth to UPW’s title run.
UP Warriorz have named Meg Lanning as their new captain for the upcoming Women’s Premier League 2026 season. The former Australia captain replaces Deepti Sharma, who led the team last season, while Alyssa Healy remained out of action due to injury.
Lanning was bought by Warriorz for INR 1.9 billion during the mega auction after he was released by Delhi Capitals, whom he had previously led to three consecutive WPL finals. One of women’s cricket’s most successful leaders, Lanning led Australia to ODI World Cup glory and four T20 World Cup titles.
Lanning scored 952 points in 27 matches in the WPL, becoming the tournament’s third highest scorer. Warriorz head coach Abhishek Nayar stated that Lanning’s extensive experience and composure made him the clear choice for the role. “Meg brings a rare combination of experience, clarity and calmness that sets her apart as a leader. Her understanding of the game, ability to manage high-pressure moments and connect with players make her an ideal captain for this group,” Nayar said.
Lanning said it was “a real privilege” to be given the responsibility of the role. “This is a talented group with a strong mix of international experience and Indian players and I am really looking forward to the challenge ahead. We will work hard together and give ourselves every opportunity to lift the trophy,” he said.
The Warriorz were managed by Healy for the 2023 and 2024 seasons, but the Australian goalkeeper was sidelined for the 2025 season due to injury, allowing Deepti to take over. Both Healy and Deepti were released ahead of the 2026 auction and Warriorz re-signed Deepti for 3.2 billion Indian rupees, while Healy remained unsold.
The franchise achieved its highest finish in the first season of 2023, clinching third place before being defeated by Mumbai Indians in the play-offs. They face a tough 2025 season, sitting in fifth place with just three wins throughout the campaign.
This year’s WPL will take place in two legs, with the first phase starting from January 9 to 17 in Navi Mumbai and continuing with the second phase in Vadodara from January 19 to February 5.
