Eight men released after investigation into alleged threat to Islamic event
A further eight people have been released while police investigate allegations of far-right threats to an Islamic event in Suffolk.
Officers became aware of the threat to the Ijtima event in the UK last weekend. Thousands of people attended the meeting at Shrubland Hall, near Ipswich, but it had to close early on police advice.
The Metropolitan Police said 12 people were arrested in connection with the investigation on Sunday and Monday, and 13 people were arrested on Thursday.
Four people were released on bail on Tuesday, and on Saturday authorities confirmed that seven more people had been released without charges. Another man was released on bail with strict conditions pending further investigation, police said.
It was stated that within the scope of the investigation, houses and vehicles were searched and more than 35 digital devices were seized.
Following these searches, a 42-year-old man was charged with two counts of possession of offensive weapons, extendable batons and a stun gun.
Police said the offenses he was charged with were not believed to be linked to the alleged threat to the UK Ijtima.
He was remanded in custody to appear at Reading Magistrates’ Court on Monday.
Commander Helen Flanagan, Head of London Counter Terrorism Police, said: “This has been a fast-moving investigation following our becoming aware of information indicating a potential threat to the Islamic incident over the past weekend.
“We have since carried out extensive investigations but have found no evidence to support that anyone has now been charged with any offense in connection with the alleged threat.
“Whilst I know this may still be very concerning to the public and particularly those in the Muslim community, I want to reassure them that our investigations are continuing.
“If we detect any potential crime or threat to the public, we will not hesitate to take further action.
“I would like to reiterate my thanks to the event organizers and the local community in the area for their support and understanding while our investigation continues.”
