At least 27 people were injured when two trams collided in Düsseldorf, Germany. According to local media reports, the incident took place at the junction of Berliner Allee and Graf-Adolf-Straße at around 11.30 on Saturday.
While the investigation into the accident, in which five people were seriously injured, continues, authorities said that none of those removed from the rails had life-threatening injuries. During the incident, two trams with approximately 60 passengers crashed into each other. Emergency teams responded to 28 more people at the scene who escaped uninjured in the collision.
According to Rheinische Post, one of the trams was reportedly on the wrong track at the time of the accident.
The outlet added that a misaligned switch may have sent one of the vehicles onto the wrong line before the crash.
Fire crews said: “Fortunately, none of the people we pulled from the tracks suffered life-threatening injuries.”
Police have now launched an investigation into the cause of the accident.
In the images from the scene, it was seen that the damaged trams were stopped in the middle of the city when the emergency services arrived.
The high-speed tram, which set out to go to the Porta Genoa district of the city, suddenly derailed.
It was stated that a person who got stuck under the tram wheels died. It is understood a second victim was traveling on the ship when the horrific accident occurred.
Passengers said they heard a deafening noise from underneath the tram minutes before the fatal collision, which one witness described as sounding like an “earthquake”.
One of those on board told ANSA: “I thought it was an earthquake. I was sitting and I fell to the ground along with the other passengers. It was terrible.”
“The guy next to me was bleeding from his head. It took me a while to get up.”
Another passenger said: “We heard a noise downstairs, then the tram derailed and we were all thrown around. The tram changed direction, accelerated and crashed into a building.”
