Assam includes tea landholding in farmers’ registry portal

GUWAHATI

Assam government has included tea and plantation class lands in its farmer registration portal; Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said this would prove to be a “game changing” move for small tea growers (STGs) in the state.

He said the facility, which was formalized on June 26, will enable STGs to obtain Farmer ID and ensure timely, requirement-based supply of fertilisers, government scheme benefits and other services on a single platform.

“This will also allow loans on better terms for STGs and eliminate middlemen who exploit our tea growers,” the Prime Minister said, calling it a major breakthrough for the tea community.

The tea industry welcomed the Assam government’s initiative.

“Officially, there are 133,626 small tea growers in Assam, but the actual number is estimated to be more than 1.5 lakh. Assuming the average household size is four, this well-designed initiative by the Prime Minister will directly benefit more than six lakh people,” said Bidyananda Barkakoty, advisor to the North East Tea Association. The former vice-chairman of the Tea Board of India said that this step will strengthen and strengthen the STGs, which contribute to around 50% of Assam’s total green leaf production.

Farmer registration portal is a centralized digital database created by government agriculture departments to create a verified Farmer ID or unique digital identity for individual farmers. It connects farmer’s personal information, Aadhaar and land records to facilitate access to subsidies, crop insurance and agriculture schemes.

Once registered, farmers do not need to submit repetitive paperwork to prove their identity or land ownership for government benefits. The registration system also integrates with land records to map ownership, allowing farmers to view land records, update links and record seasonal crop surveys online.

“By creating a transparent, verified database, the government can directly transfer financial assistance, fertilizer subsidies and other scheme benefits to eligible farmers without leakage,” said an Agriculture Ministry official.
