Supreme Court to hear plea on police action against students on Monday
Senior advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan, who appeared on behalf of the petitioner, submitted that a petition has been filed. “There is urgency. Police extremism is turning against students. Something needs to be done… the court is standing in the way,” the senior lawyer said. Speaking on behalf of the bench, CJI Kant said the bench will take up the defense on Monday.
Earlier in the day, CJI Kant took exception to what he described as “false news” by the media over recent comments made by a lawyer in connection with a statement he made on CJP-led protests in Delhi earlier this week. “I was moved by what I never said,” said CJI Kant. Elaborating on the matter, he added that a lawyer had mentioned the case on Wednesday. “It was just a representation and people began to recklessly report it. I checked the records. No documents were submitted… just a mention of me. No petition has been submitted to date. Can a petition sent to the General Secretariat be taken up for hearing?” CJI Kant stated.
In an unrelated development, the SC issued an interim order banning unauthorized use or circulation of live-streamed court proceedings on social media and other digital platforms without prior permission. The SC made it clear that the order will not affect news reporting. “This is not a speech ban on the press,” the bench, comprising CJI Kant, Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana, declared.
